Step 1 - Organize a Recycling Team and Select a Coordinator

Recycling EmblemA coordinating team will help the program run smoothly. The team will be responsible for program planning, publicity, operation and make recycling fun for the students. The team should include students, parents, teachers, the custodian, food service staff, administration and a representative from the community recycling program.

A coordinator or team leader is also important; this person should have an interest in and enthusiasm for recycling, as well as good communication and organization skill. This team will be responsible for:

  • Determining items to recycle
  • Developing the recycling system
  • Day-to-day oversight of activities
  • Continuing education about the program
  • Evaluation and reporting of results

Importance of recycling

  • Recycling can reduce the demand on landfills.
  • Reduce risks of our health and environment from improper disposal of some wastes, such as used motor oil and tires.
  • Reduce air and water pollution that may be caused during the manufacture of new products.
  • Recycling saves resources and energy.
  • Schools can save waste disposal costs or maybe make a little money through a good recycling program.
