Step 10 - Reward Yourself

It is important to stress that recycling helps the environment and that is a reward that everyone enjoys. A prize system, however, can make the recycling program even more successful. Take into account large and small class size, so that all groups will have equal chances winning prizes.

Prizes can take many forms. The winning class may receive a pizza party, a trip to the local recycling center, or the honor of being the group to monitor the recycling program for the next month. Students may receive "Certificates of Appreciation." Individual students can also be recognized for outstanding efforts.

Awards may also be available for your school to receive. In 1994, the Arkansas Recycling Coalition and Weyerhaeuser presented 10 schools with $1000 recycling awards. The Environmental Protection Agency offers the Presidents Environmental Youth Awards Program. Other programs may be available, keep your eyes open.
