Step 8 - Consider Composting

Recycling EmblemYard wastes or trimmings make up about 13 percent of the municipal solid waste stream. In Arkansas, we can no longer send these materials to the landfill to take up valuable landfill space.

What's the answer?..... Composting.

Yard waste like leaves, grass trimmings and shrubbery trimmings can be composted into natural soil additives for lawns, gardens or flower beds. Compost improves soil texture, increases the soil's ability to hold moisture and air, suppresses weed growth and decreases erosion.

Your school can make a compost pile from the leaves and grass clipping created by maintenance of the school grounds. Organize a class project (great for sciences classes) to tend the pile and watch its progress.

Learn more about composting by contacting your County Extension Office fact sheets and videos are available.
