Tour/Workshop: Geospatial tools for watershed and wetland
management and information
Providing the public and professionals with up-to-date
information on the characteristics of watershed and wetlands is a key element in
their effective management and in public involvement. The staff of the
Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies will present a half-day
workshop on three new systems that have been developed in Arkansas to provide
public and technical information. These approaches couple sophisticated
geospatial analyses with a user-friendly web system. The Arkansas
Wetland Resource Information Management System provides a central
geospatial aggregation of the many wetland management activities
of federal state and NGOs to provide a comprehensive view of a
selected location. The Arkansas Watershed Information System provides
usable public reporting and mapping of complex relationships between
watersheds in Arkansas and their environmental and cultural characteristics.
The Wetland Prioritization System integrates an innovative geospatial
approach to prioritization of existing and proposed wetland
locations across the state.
In the workshop the developers of these three systems will
provide information on their design and approach as well as hands-on use. The workshop will be offered in the new JB Hunt Transport
Services Inc. Center for Academic Excellence.
The systems were developed in cooperation with and with support
from the 86th General Assembly of the Arkansas Legislature, the Arkansas
Natural Resources Commission, the Arkansas Multi-Agency Wetland Planning
Team, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Arkansas Game and
Fish Commission, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, the
Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, the Arkansas Forestry
Commission, and the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.
